Sector calls for ministerial childcare taskforce to raise profile

1 min read Early years education
Senior figures in the early years sector have called on a ministerial taskforce established to drive government free childcare expansion plans to raise its profile and engage with providers.

Former prime minister David Cameron created the cross-departmental childcare implementation taskforce in June 2015. But leading early years organisations believed it had been disbanded, after having no contact with the group.

London Early Years Foundation chief executive June O'Sullivan said she had received no correspondence from the group, and was unaware of its remit, despite having meetings with childcare minister Caroline Dinenage.

"None of us have heard from it and we're the main providers," she said.

"[Government] policies at the moment are creating operational problems, such as recruitment. The only way to solve them is in collaboration [with the sector]. Change is not going to happen without our engagement."
