A child protection taskforce has been established to drive government reforms in the area, it has been announced.

Prime Minister David Cameron said the taskforce, which will be chaired by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, will be responsible for leading improvements in the way police, social services and other agencies approach child protection.

It has been tasked with driving improvements in the protection of vulnerable children by:

It will join 10 other implementation taskforces announced at the beginning of the month – including taskforces on childcare and troubled families reforms.

Announcing the new taskforce, Cameron said the state must intervene more directly to help the most vulnerable families.

"That is why I have asked the Education Secretary to chair a new child protection taskforce to drive fundamental reforms to make sure that we are protecting the most vulnerable children and giving them the best chance to succeed in life," he said.

"Through this work we will accelerate our current reforms to children’s social work, and will overhaul the way that police, social services and other agencies work together locally.

The membership of the taskforce, which is due to meet for the first time in the next few weeks, includes Home Secretary Theresa May, Justice Secretary Michael Gove, Communities Secretary Greg Clark, Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, and children's minister Edward Timpson.
