Scouts sign up to Institute for Youth Work

The Scout Association is among a clutch of organisations to sign up to the Institute for Youth Work, allowing its staff and volunteers to join the membership body for half price.

Hosted by the National Youth Agency (NYA), the institute will launch in the next couple of weeks. It now has six "organisational supporters" that pay £1,000 a year in return for a 50 per cent membership discount for their members, employees and volunteers.

As well as the Scouts, the University of Huddersfield, De Montfort University, Manchester Metropolitan University, Bradford College, and the NYA itself have become organisational supporters.

Stephen Peck, operations manager at the Scout Association, said the organisation was supporting the institute because it was “an exciting opportunity for our 100,000 adults to engage in the wider youth work agenda, debate issues of mutual concern and interest across the whole youth work field, and have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of continuing professional development programmes”.

“We believe that the institute will help to broaden the perspective of individual youth workers, encourage greater understanding of the contribution that differing delivery channels bring to youth work and enable a stronger voice for youth workers,” he said.

“Ultimately young people can only gain from any initiative that improves the quality of youth work and we believe the institute has the potential to do just that.”
