Scotland launches specialist early education courses

Specialist early education teachers are to be created by new graduate and postgraduate courses in Scotland.

Scottish Government children's minister, Adam Ingram, announced funding of £210,000 for courses at Aberdeen and Stirling universities to provide specific training in early education to meet the needs of children in nursery and early primary.

From autumn, around 40 teachers working in early years settings in the north of Scotland will begin the Postgraduate Certificate in Early Education at Aberdeen, after the university secured funding of £150,000. Around 20 undergraduates will also begin a BA in Professional Education (primary) at Stirling with a specialism in early years. Funding of £60,000 has been earmarked for this course.

Ingram, who made the announcement at an Early Years Framework conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday, said: "These qualifications will produce teachers with flexible skills in primary education who also have the benefit of intensive training specifically in early years education."
