Schools and councils 'must update risk assessments' before SEND pupils return to school

Schools, nurseries and local authorities must update risk assessments for children with education, health and care (EHC) plans to determine whether they can return to settings which reopen on 1 June, updated government guidance states.

Updated documents must be used to “consider whether it is now safe to bring back children and young people with EHC plans whatever year group they are in”, the guidance published by the Department for Education over the bank holiday weekend states.

The document states that in some cases a child may not be able to attend schools from 1 June if support stated on an EHC plan can be better met “in a different way temporarily, for example, in the home or online or in a different way at school”.

The guidance places responsibility on schools and local authorities to decide on an individual basis whether each child with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or those with an EHC plan should return to school.
