School places shortage 'to affect half of councils within five years'

1 min read Education
A shortage of secondary school places could leave nearly 134,000 children without a school to go to by 2023/24, local authorities have warned.

Analysis carried out by the Local Government Association (LGA) found that there will not be enough secondary school places for children in nearly half of England's local authority areas by 2023/24.

The LGA's analysis suggests that while 13 of the 152 local authorities across England local authorities will experience a school place shortfall in 2019/20 the figure is set to rise to 71 (46.7 per cent) by 2023/24.

The analysis also predicts that the number of children at risk of not having a school to go to is set to rise from 9,751 to 133,926 over the same period.
