Salvation Army opens its first play area

1 min read Early Years
The Salvation Army in County Durham is opening its refurbished Family Church Centre.

The church, in Langley Moor and Brandon, is the first Salvation Army building in the UK to feature a purpose-built children's play area, called the Boyne Play Pit.

The centre was given a £200,000 makeover and will officially open its doors on 28 June.

The play area has a mining theme to keep up Langley Moor's coal mining history and a graffiti artist has decorated it with images of a miner and a miner's canary.

Major Meshiel Brown, leader of the Salvation Army in Langley Moor and Brandon, said: "We have been in Langley Moor for six years and came with a vision that one day we would be able to reach out to families with facilities like this."

The worship hall is integrated into the café and children's play area to create a sense of informality, with a more modern style of praise and worship.
