Safeguarding: Government advisor warns that teachers are using drama and sport to mask

The Government's top advisor on sex offenders has warned that some teachers may be using wrestling games and drama lessons to get inappropriately close to children.

Roger Singleton, who is a special advisor to education secretary Alan Johnson, also expressed concern that private tutoring is often taking place in children's bedrooms.


Speaking at a Children Now conference on safeguarding last week, he said: "Among PE staff and sports instructors and so on, wrestling games seem to be quite a convenient cover for activities."

 
He added: "I do [also] come across explanations for sexually provocative photographs taken by adults of pupils, explained in terms of "oh, well this was part of a drama to bring the girls out of themselves, to give them more confidence, to build their self-esteem'. "These are some of the things that people say in explanation for what - at least prima facie - is unusual and possibly concerning behaviour."
