Rural councils receive money for diploma student transport

1 min read Education
The government has pledged to give rural councils extra funding to help students studying for the diploma travel to schools and colleges.

As part of its £90m package of funding for councils to deliver the diplomas an extra £2.9m will be handed to rural areas for the next academic year.

Of this, £1.5m will be used to fund 14 to19 access and transport co-ordinator posts in 40 rural areas and £1.4m will be added to the "sparsity weighting" grant given to rural councils.

Iain Wright, the minister responsible for 14 to19 reforms, said: "What I am announcing today will really help those students who live in rural, or semi-rural areas, where public transport is not as extensive as in other areas, and where the distances between learning sites are greater."
