Rotherham: Twelve new abuse victims come forward

Twelve more victims of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham have come forward since a damning report was published last week.

Giving evidence to the home affairs select committee, chief constable of South Yorkshire Police David Compton said that nearly 40 people are currently on bail in relation to child sexual exploitation (CSE).

Just last week an independent report by professor Alexis Jay estimated that approximately 1,400 children were sexually exploited in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

The report was highly critical of the handling of CSE by both Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police.

But Compton said the force now takes CSE very seriously. He told MPs that the number of staff dealing with CSE at the force increased from three in 2010 to 62 in 2014.
