The groups are calling on ministers to implement the plan to ensure young people have access to youth workers to improve their mental health, wellbeing, life skills, have a voice in political decision making and to “realise their full potential”.

They warn that as of 2022 around a fifth of children aged seven to 16 have a probable mental health disorder.

Training volunteers, attracting new recruits to youth work courses, and upskilling the existing workforce are also being called for. The groups want youth work to be subject to a similar scheme to the Teach First training programme for teachers.
