The Department of the Environment has granted a temporary exemption while ministers review a policy that nursery drivers must have PSV licences. The policy was introduced following departmental guidance that some transport arrangements used by nurseries and other childcare providers could be illegal and not properly insured.
The temporary exemption will allow existing transport services to operate legally while the review is completed.
Environment minister Sammy Wilson, said: I fully recognise the difficulties that have followed the recent realisation that some childcare providers may have been operating transport services in a way which did not meet all of the legal requirements. The anxiety that this has caused for nurseries and parents is regrettable.
It is expected that the scheme will involve individual exemptions for owners of vehicles used by registered childcare providers.
