The data, which was collected by Connexions, shows that this year 96.6 per cent of 16-year-olds leaving school received a definite or conditional offer of a place to carry on studying compared with 95.6 per cent of in 2009.
This figure was 91.3 per cent for 17-year-olds compared with 89.1 per cent in 2009.
The increase comes as the September Guarantee, a government commitment to offer young people leaving statutory education a place in education or training, reaches its fourth year. The guarantee was initially aimed at 16-year-olds but was extended to include 17-year-olds in 2008.
John Davey, director of the National Connexions Network, said: "This is a particularly significant achievement in the light of the uncertainty created by the cuts to Connexions’ funding announced in June this year and reinforces the message that this is a key piece of work that will need to continue if we are to be successful in engaging all young people in learning through to 18 by 2015."
