Pupil premium plus to be extended to all adopted schoolchildren

All adopted children are to receive additional support in school after the government acted on campaigners' calls for funding to be extended, it has been announced.

In April 2014, the enhanced pupil premium – known as the “pupil premium plus” was extended to those who were adopted or granted a special guardianship order after 30 December 2005.

Although the additional funding was welcomed, campaigners raised concerns that thousands of children born before the cut-off date would miss out on vital support.

Now the government has pledged to provide an additional £20m to the £100m fund initially announced to help 10,000 adopted children in total.

The extra money, which comes to £1,900 per pupil, is intended to help schools provide tailored support to raise the attainment of all adopted children from September.
