Schools will receive pupil premium for all children entitled to free school meals

1 min read Education Social Care
Schools are to be given an extra 430 pupil premium for all children entitled to free school meals or living in care, the government has announced.

In 2011 the premium will stand at £625m, but this figure will rise each year until 2014, when it will be worth £2.5bn.

As funding for the premium increases, the government will boost the amount of cash each child receives and by 2013, the premium will be extended to all children who have previously been eligible for free school meals.

The government is also launching a premium for the children of armed services personnel. In 2011, this will provide £200 for every service child - largely to improve pastoral support in schools.

Schools are to receive pupil premium cash direct from government, whilst academies and free schools will get their funding from the Young People’s Learning Agency.
