Professionals call on Edward Timpson to champion youth engagement

Youth work professionals from around the country are urging government to prioritise youth engagement following the appointment of Edward Timpson as minister responsible for young people's services at the Department for Education (DfE).

Helen Hibbert, strategic director of partnership for Young London, said Timpson must be a “champion for young people” in government, adding that the government’s approach to youth work must not be limited to the National Citizen Service (NCS).

“NCS has its place in the youth agenda, but shouldn’t be the dominant driver, and youth engagement in particular must retain a high profile across all government departments,” she said.

Gill Millar, regional youth work adviser of the South West Regional Youth Work Unit, said Timpson must take ownership of the Positive for Youth policy document, which was introduced by the former children's minister Tim Loughton.
