According to a report to be published this week, there are no current best-practice guidelines around educating adolescents about gambling, despite the fact that the rate of problem gambling is more than three times as high among young people as adults in the UK.
Charity GamCare provides support and advice about problem gambling and runs a national helpline. It decided to investigate the problem partly because of anecdotal evidence from callers.
"We receive many calls from people in their 20s, 30s and 40s saying they’ve been gambling since they were 12 years old, but few from young people themselves," said Jane Rigbye, head of education development at GamCare. "We wanted to find out why people weren’t coming to us for treatment earlier."
