Announcing the initiative as part of the Pre-Budget Report Chancellor Alistair Darling said: "We will offer financial support for up to 10,000 undergraduates from low income background to take up internships."
The initiative will provide bursaries to students, to help them carry out work experience placements, which were previously only accessible to young people from more affluent backgrounds.
The idea is a response to Alan Milburn's report on fair access to the professions, which found that disadvantaged young people experienced significant barriers to securing careers in trades such as journalism and law.
The cash is expected to be available as early as summer 2010.
