Police to give on the spot rewards to young people

1 min read Youth Justice Youth Work
Police in the south-west are handing out on the spot rewards to young people doing good deeds, after a local teenager suggested the idea.

Devon & Cornwall Constabulary will issue young people with "reward tickets" under the motiv8 scheme if they are spotted doing a good deed such as picking up litter or handing in lost property. Young people who receive a ticket will also be considered for a reward such as a shopping or local attraction voucher.

The scheme was thought up by 16-year-old Kirsty Ogborne from Paignton in Devon, as part of a competition to promote "pro-social behaviour". It will initially run in Torbay, and police plan to roll it out across Cornwall and Devon if successful.

Kirsty said: "I never expected my idea to win, let alone be put into practice. I thought it would be good for police to give out rewards rather than just fines."

Chris Singer, Torbay policing commander superintendent, said: "Young people often get bad press but young people do a lot of good things and this is a great way of recognising that."
