Police anti-social behaviour powers to be strengthened

1 min read Health Youth Justice
Police will be given greater powers to tackle anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence as part of a Bill outlined in the Queen's Speech today.

Under the bill the Licensing Act will be overhauled to ban the sale of alcohol below cost price and allow councils to charge more for late-night licences to pay for additional policing.

It will also give councils powers to close down shops or bars that persistently sell to children, and will double the maximum fine for selling to children to £20,000.

Home Secretary Theresa May said: "We are committed to ensuring the police are free to spend more time in the community tackling crime and not tied up in red tape.

"This bill will ensure police have the powers they need to tackle anti-social behaviour, and will overhaul the existing licensing regime to tackle the drink-fuelled violence and disorder which blights many of our communities.
