Play: Safe street scheme due for a trial run

A scheme that will create low-cost safe places for children to play in their local streets is set to be launched by Sustrans.

DIY Streets follows on from the sustainable transport charity's HomeZone scheme that opened up streets across the UK for social use byredesigning them to allow people and vehicles to share space safely.

However, after the end of the Department for Transport fund that backedHome Zones, a new scheme aiming to recreate the benefits of itspredecessor more cheaply will be trialled.

Using funding from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation the approach will bepiloted in 10 communities and rolled out nationally if it issuccessful.

Peter Lipman, Sustrans' director for liveable neighbourhoods andlow-carbon travel, said other areas would be able to implement thescheme with a toolkit that will be developed over the next six months. The news emerged at last week's Play England conference.
