Ministers want to make sure all families in England have access to technology such as the internet so children and young people can study and access educational resources at home.
The initiative is known as Home Access, and schools minister Jim Knight has set up a Home Access taskforce including representatives from the IT industry, education, and the third sector.
The government is concerned that over a million children in England do not have access to IT. This makes it harder for children from disadvantaged families to do well in education, widening the gap between rich and poor.
Under the proposals families who qualify for certain benefits could also be offered financial help to by equipment. The government is also keen that technology should be backed by training and educational support.
