The charity, which surveyed more than 2,000 16- to 25-year-olds, 130 of whom were not in education, employment or training, found that while 15 per cent of young people felt their life lacks direction, this increased to 42 per cent among the unemployed.
Martina Milburn, chief executive of the Prince’s Trust, said: "The implications of youth unemployment stretch beyond the dole queue. The emotional effects on young people are profound, long-term and can become irreversible. We must act now to prevent a lost generation of young people before it is too late."
The Prince’s Trust is launching a campaign calling for the government, businesses and individuals to help raise £1m a week to support unemployed and disadvantaged young people.
