Ofsted spot check calls for priority action at council

Another council requires urgent action to improve its safeguarding arrangements for children, Ofsted said today.

The watchdog's spot check of child protection services in Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council found one area for "priority action" – a high number of incomplete initial assessments of children. Some of these assessments included evidence of potential risk of harm to children.

But a spokeswoman for Knowsley council said: "The outstanding cases identified during the inspection were all immediately acted upon to ensure the safety of the children and young people involved."

She added: "The council had already undertaken an audit of the performance of its referral and assessment service using external consultants to identify areas for improvement – something which inspectors praised."
