Ofsted apologises for withholding Haringey documents

Ofsted has apologised for withholding documents relevant to the review into the sacking of former Haringey director of children's services Sharon Shoesmith.

In a statement released today, the watchdog admitted making a "serious mistake" but said it had nothing to hide.

The documents revealed today include an inspector’s notebook, emails and drafts of the emerging report of the Haringey inspection in November 2008.

The High Court judge overseeing Shoesmith’s case against Ofsted gave the body 14 days to ensure no other documents were left undisclosed.

In the statement Ofsted said: "We very much regret that this has happened. We have apologised unreservedly to the court and other parties.

"Unfortunately mistakes sometimes happen and while this is a serious one and deeply regrettable, we have nothing to hide."

The inspectorate added that it felt the documents released today show the "professionalism and thoroughness" of the inspectors’ process during the inspection.

The statement continued: "While we are very sorry for the late disclosure, we do not believe that the documentation we have disclosed today has any material bearing on the central issues in the case. We remain confident in the quality of the inspection and the findings in the report."

Shoesmith is seeking a judicial review and calling for compensation against Haringey Council, Children's Secretary Ed Balls and regulator Ofsted following her sacking.
