NYA offers guidance for councils to prevent a repeat of the riots

1 min read Youth Work
The National Youth Agency (NYA) has published guidance for councils in a bid to prevent a repeat of last summer's riots.

The briefing document Summer Riots: Summary of existing literature and key observations provides details of the crimes committed, the age of offenders and causes of the riots.

It also provides good practice examples of successful policies that councils have used to improve youth provision since the riots.

These include a scheme in Harrow where youth workers joined police patrols during the summer holidays to talk to young people and prevent problems from escalating. A project in Hackney also features, which saw a cinema converted into an academy offering training to young people through a joint council, BBC and Bafta scheme.

Alex Stutz, the National Youth Agency's head of policy and co author of the guidance, said: "We wanted to present all the evidence to emerge from the riots in one place to help councils develop policies to support young people, from the demographics of those involved to the variety of reports into why it happened."
