Nurseries: Private providers demand free fruit

1 min read
Children who attend private and voluntary sector nurseries could be missing out on free fruit, providers have said.

Under the Government's Fruit for Schools scheme children aged four tosix attending nurseries attached to primary schools are entitled to afree piece of fruit or vegetable every day.

However, the scheme only applies to local authority maintained settings'so children attending private or voluntary sector nurseries are notbenefiting.

Providers have argued if the Government expands the scheme to nurseriesthat are not attached to schools, private nurseries should be includedtoo.

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day NurseriesAssociation, said this was another example of the challenges faced byprivate and voluntary sector nurseries.

She said: "We would like to see children in private and voluntarynurseries being able to access free fruit and vegetables in the same waythose in maintained nurseries can. This would help create more equalitybetween the sectors.
