Nurseries failing to give children a balanced diet

Children are not being fed a balanced diet at nursery, with many childcare centres failing to adapt the principles of healthy eating for the needs of under-fives, research has found.

The two-year study, led by the Local Authorities Co-ordinators of Regulatory Services (Lacors), was based on a survey of more than 100 nurseries in 29 councils.

Lacors chairman councillor Paul Bettison said: "Most people who are concerned about healthy eating assume it's all about obesity, but nutrition problems can also be caused by not giving children enough of the types of food they need."
