NHS puts health messages on school computers

Young people in Essex will see daily interactive health messages appear on their computer desktops following the launch of an NHS campaign.

NHS South West Essex Community Services' Health Improvement Team has linked up with around 12 secondary schools and colleges in Thurrock, Brentwood and Basildon to deliver the messages, which will cover topics including healthy eating, sexual health, bullying, smoking and drug abuse.

Young people can click on the messages, which will appear on their school computers, to access more information.

The team said the messages would work better than posters or leaflets as they are live and "talk to" the user. "The creative message, often in cartoon style, will automatically appear in the corner of the screen and the young people can click on it to find out more information," said health improvement specialist Jenny Garrett.

The team already runs a young people's website called Young Health.
