Newham children’s services jumps from ‘inadequate’ to ‘good’ in three years

Ofsted inspectors have praised improvements at Newham council’s children’s services three years after they handed the department its lowest rating.

The impact of leaders on improving social work is singled out for particular praise and rated as “outstanding”.

Meanwhile it has been ranked “good” in terms of child protection, support for care leavers as well as for its overall effectiveness.

At its previous inspection in 2019, Ofsted said children’s services leaders were “inadequate” and failing to create “an environment for social work to flourish”. It added that care leavers needs were not being met and managers lacked ambition for children.

But following their most recent visit, in July this year, they concluded that “leaders, managers and staff have worked unstintingly to drive change”.
