The government's flagship National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme will cost as much as 110m for 90,000 participants by 2014, the Cabinet Office has revealed.

The figure, representing more than £1,200 per participant, emerged as the government called on business and public sector organisations to play their part in the expansion of the service.

Government has launched an online survey to gauge how organisations can get involved with the scheme and assess potential "risks" and "challenges".

Last year around 8,000 young people took part in NCS but the government hopes to expand this to 30,000 this year and 90,000 by 2014.

In time the government wants all 16-year-olds to have the opportunity to take part.

Nick Hurd, minister for civil society, said: "Young people are our future, and we need to harness their energy, enthusiasm and motivation at an early age so that we can motivate them to make a difference for themselves and to the lives of those around them in their communities.
