NCB estimates cuts of up to £405m for children's charities

Children and young people's charities face funding cuts of almost £405m over the five years up to 2015/16, the National Children's Bureau (NCB) has estimated.

The charity’s Beyond the Cuts report found that compared to the voluntary sector as a whole, the 34,000 children’s charities in England will see a greater proportion of its public funding cut, and a significant number fear closure over the coming year.

NCB with the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, calculated baseline figures on central and local government spending gathered from charity accounts for 2008/09.

Estimated public spending was then calculated using data from the Treasury, Office for Budget Responsibility, Institute for Fiscal Studies and the Department for Communities and Local Government, coupled with trends in public spending.

NCB also consulted with 74 children’s charities to find out what changes to funding they are experiencing and how they are responding and adapting.
