Councils pass on severe budget cuts to hundreds of children's charities

Almost 400 charities working with children and young people are facing crippling budget cuts due to a fall in council funding, according to latest Trades Union Congress (TUC) research.

Based on 265 Freedom of Information Act responses from councils in England, the TUC has found 2,215 charities are facing budgets cuts caused by council cutbacks.

Children’s and young people’s charities have been hardest hit. Of those affected, 382 work with children and young people, 112 in the adult care sector, 151 with those with disabilities and 142 support the elderly.

All charities included in the research have experienced a funding cut of at least five per cent. In some cases they have seen their council funding completely withdrawn.

Birmingham City Council has cut funding to the largest number of charities, with 191 in the city affected. Cross-council group London Councils has cut funding to 174 groups.
