National childcare strategy: Providers launch review to address sustainability

Private and voluntary childcare providers are launching a major review to look for ways to tackle sustainability problems caused by the National Childcare Strategy.

Headed up by the Pre-School Learning Alliance, the review will involvethe 14 largest nursery operators in the private and voluntary sector andwill address issues highlighted by Children Now regarding the long-termfuture of the strategy (Children Now, 9-15 May).

The review will examine how the private and voluntary sector can have agreater role in the running of children's centres, look at the adequacyof funding for nursery education and lobby to highlight concerns aboutthe long-term sustainability of services.

Andrew Fitzmaurice, chief executive of provider Nord Anglia, whichrecently reported losses in its nursery unit (Children Now, 16-22 May)said: "The private and voluntary sector already makes a massivecontribution to childcare in the UK. However we feel there is more wecan do to seek constructive solutions to the many challenges we allface."
