MPs voice concern at Child Poverty Bill 'get-out' clause

A potential "get-out" clause in the government's new Child Poverty Bill has been questioned by MPs.

The bill represents the government's efforts to enshrine its bid to end child poverty by 2020 into legislation. But a clause within the bill requires fiscal and economic circumstances to be regarded before any strategy is published or advice given to devolved governments and local authorities.

Committee member Joan Humble told CYP Now: "Our concern is if the government is enshrining in statute targets that must be achieved, to have a clause referring to necessary available funds seems to undermine the commitment to meeting those targets."
