The all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on youth affairs says young people are already “disproportionately affected” by the pandemic.

They “are likely to feel the negative economic impact of Covid-19 more acutely due to the varied and often atypical nature of their work”, it adds, highlighting fears of a “devastating effect” on job prospects for school-leavers in the aftermath of the pandemic.

The inquiry aims to understand more about the impact of a global recession sparked by coronavirus on young people and says it will look at which groups are “likely to be most affected”.

It is calling on organisations working with young people as well as those with a “greater understanding of the economic and financial impacts of Covid-19 and a global recession” to submit evidence to the review.

Launching the inquiry, Lloyd Russell-Moyle, chair of the APPG on youth affairs said "young people cannot be left to face the impacts of Covid-19 alone".

He added: "Young people disproportionately work in sectors that will be the worst hit by the economic impact of Covid-19. Whether they are saving towards a first-time home, acquiring the skills to be work ready, or affording basic necessities like food, bills, and rent, it is vital that we understand the challenges they face.

“The government has said that it is committed to supporting young people find jobs. The APPG wants to understand what additional support young people need to succeed in the aftermath of Covid-19."

Evidence should be submitted via an online inquiry form by 17 September.
