The Children Schools and Families Select Committee report into the training of children and families social workers concludes that new recruits are routinely placed in extremely challenging circumstances with insufficient preparation or support.
Echoing concerns raised in the Social Work Taskforce's interim report published yesterday, the committee urged the government to establish "coherent leadership" for the profession.
The report states: "Nine years on from the tragedy of Victoria Climbie, the lack of a coherent and prestigious national profile for the social work profession appears to us to be perhaps the most important failing of Every Child Matters reforms."
The committee suggests a "Social Work Development Agency" should bring together responsibility for recruitment, workforce development and funding and commissioning of training, replacing the functions of the Children's Workforce Development Council.
