More than 300,000 children in need in England

In March this year 304,000 children were classified as in need according to the latest statistics from councils in England.

The figure equates to 276 out of every 10,000 children in the country. Councils' children in need records shows that 407,800 were classified as in need between October 2008 and March 2009.

As of March 2009 the figure was 304,400, which equates to 276 out of every 10,000 children.

The figures show that 41 per cent of those in need were either abused or neglected or at risk of abuse and neglect.  Family breakdown was a factor in 15 per cent of cases and 13 per cent were classified as in need due to disability or medical condition.

Of those classified as in need 54 per cent were boys and 45 per cent were girls
