Ministers to consider making children's centres 'one-stop shops' for parents of under-twos

A cross-departmental ministerial group is to explore the idea of turning children's centres into "one-stop shops" for advice on pregnancy and raising babies.

The new group, established by Prime Minister Theresa May, will identify gaps in family support for under-twos and recommend how central government departments can work together to fill those gaps. Andrea Leadsom, leader of the House of Commons, will chair the group.

Leadsom, who prompted controversy in 2016 when she suggested that male childcarers may be paedophiles, said plans to be discussed include developing Sure Start children's centres into "one-stop shops" for families seeking advice on pregnancy and raising babies.

Leadsom added that she wanted local authorities to be required by law to develop perinatal strategies. She also suggested that the task of registering births could move to children's centres so that the support needs of every family can be assessed.
