Minister announces school funding review

Education
Schools minister Jim Knight has announced a review of school funding, looking at how it can be used to support Every Child Matters outcomes.
The review of the Dedicated Schools Grant will aim to produce a funding system to help schools and local authorities narrow the achievement gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and others.

The grant looks set to remain ring-fenced, despite calls for this to be lifted. But the review will look at how the grant can be used more flexibly.

Knight said: "The review will examine the scope for greater flexibility in the use of the Dedicated Schools Grant to support the delivery of Every Child Matters outcomes and the implementation of The Children's Plan."

The review will continue until March 2010 with decisions announced in July 2010 in preparation for the school funding settlement for 2011/12 onwards.
