Concerns around young black people being disproportionally targeted by the Metropolitan Police have prompted an overhaul of its gangs violence matrix.

The controversial database, created in 2011 in response to the riots in the capital that summer, is used by officers to target young people associated with and at risk of being involved in gangs.

Its use has been criticised by local communities in the capital, as well as in Labour MP David Lammy’s 2017 review into the treatment of black, Asian and minority ethnic people in the criminal justice system.

They are concerned that young black men are being unfairly labelled at risk of being involved with gangs, compared with their likelihood of their offending or their chances of being a victim.
