Media 'whipping up hatred' of transgender children, youth sector warns

2 mins read Youth Work
Elements of the national media are using unfounded prejudice to stir up hate and create a climate of fear for transgender children, leading youth organisations have warned.

An open letter published by youth charity Woodcraft Folk, and signed by six other organisations, including the British Youth Council, UK Youth, and the National Youth Agency, states that national media outlets are "whipping up hatred towards trans children".

"There is no evidence that trans children, young people or volunteers present any greater safeguarding risk than their [non-transgender] peers," the letter states.

"To suggest this is the case is using unfounded prejudice to stir up hate and create a climate of fear. This must stop."

The letter was prompted by an article in The Mail on Sunday last month reporting that a former Girl Guide leader is suing the organisation after she was expelled for objecting to a "controversial" policy allowing boys who identify as female to join.
