Louise Casey to head national unit for troubled families

Labour's former respect tsar Louise Casey is to lead the government's Troubled Families Team, charged with fulfilling the Prime Minister's goal to transform the lives of 120,000 troubled families by 2015.

Earlier this month, CYP Now revealed that a dedicated family unit was under development within the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to co-ordinate intensive support for troubled families across central government departments.

David Cameron has now confirmed that Casey will head up this unit, reporting to the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and working closely with ministers across government.

Casey has been tasked with delivering "tangible, measurable and rapid progress" towards meeting Cameron’s commitment on troubled families within the course of this parliament, building on the work of the various intensive family intervention pilots running across the country.

Cameron claimed he is "determined" to transform the lives of troubled families. "To build strong communities, we have to start with parenting and families," he said. "Tens of thousands of pounds are spent on these families but no-one is getting involved and dealing with them to turn their lives around.
