Loughton: Civil servants ignorant of how parliament works

The former children's minister has revealed that he once briefed more than a hundred Department for Education civil servants about "how parliament works".

Speaking exclusively to CYP Now, Tim Loughton explained how he discovered DfE civil servants had a “limited” understanding of the broader operations of government during his time in office.

Following errors made by staff, he offered to do an optional talk for a “few people” about “how parliament works, what a typical MP’s day looks like, and what ministers needed to be able to do”.

“Over a hundred civil servants turned up over one lunchtime,” said Loughton. “I was inundated with questions and I was quite gobsmacked.”

Loughton said the problems with officials understanding the workings of parliament sprang from government departments acting independently from the House of Commons.
