Lottery funding for Welsh youth reward scheme

Youth Work
A local authority in south Wales is setting up a reward scheme to encourage young people into positive activities.

Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council is launching the initiative after receiving over £200,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The scheme will see disadvantaged 13- to 19-year-olds who take part in community work, or achieve agreed goals, given credits that can be exchanged for leisure activities.

The cash comes from the Young People's Fund. This has announced grants totalling £1.3m for eight projects across Wales.

Mike Theodoulou, chair of the Young People's Fund Committee, said: "I have no doubt that the projects we have funded will have wide-reaching benefits for hundreds of young people from various communities and backgrounds in Wales."
