London Mayor visits controversial Mayoral Academy sites

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has visited the first two schools set to become Mayoral Academies, despite serious concerns about the project.

In January, CYP Now reported that members from all parties represented in the London Assembly had come out against the mayoral academies plan.

They raised concerns that £8m from the London Development Agency (LDA) will be used to fund the schools, which are both in the borough of Enfield, meaning the local authority could disproportionately benefit from the scheme.

But, today, the Mayor renewed his commitment to the project by meeting with pupils and teachers at Turin Grove and Gladys Aylward schools, which are on course to become Mayoral Academies in September.

"I’m thoroughly impressed by the enthusiasm and energy of the pupils and staff I met today," said Johnson. "It is my personal belief our schools have a duty to bring out the best in every young person and I truly hope that both Turin Grove and Gladys Aylward will be shining examples of the opportunities Academies can deliver.
