Local government: Stoke-on-Trent services taken over by partnership of providers

A partnership between three children's services providers has been set up to take over Stoke-on-Trent's children's services department.

Serco, Shaftesbury Young People and Care and Health won the contract,worth just over 5m. It was the only bid to include a partnershipwith a voluntary organisation.

Serco, which leads the project, has employed a team of directors anddeputy directors who will take up their positions between now and theend of June. Ged Rowney, currently director of children and youngpeople's services at Wigan Council, is to head up the team.

Elaine Simpson, managing director of Serco Education and Children'sServices, said the contract to run the children's services departmentwas put out to tender after the Department for Education and Skillsdecided to intervene following a number of poor reports from Ofsted.
