Local Government Assocation warns against two-tier education system

Councils are urging the government to protect against the creation of a two-tier education system as it powers ahead with radical reforms.

Responding to Education Secretary Michael Gove's invitation for all schools to join the academy programme, chairman of the Local Government Association Margaret Eaton called for safeguards to be put in place so the same quality of education is offered to all students regardless of where they are educated.

She said: "Councils have long been working to give families and children more say over how and where they are educated, and school choice is something councils support. Schools already have considerable independence from local authorities and what academy status offers is more freedom from central government rules, on the curriculum, discipline procedures and the pay and reward of school staff.
