Gove calls on local authorities to help drive up standards

1 min read Education
Education Secretary Michael Gove has sought to allay council fears that their role in education will be dramatically reduced through the expansion of academies.

The Local Government Association (LGA) had highlighted concerns that the increase in the number of academies, which have greater autonomy, would seriously undermine councils' role in education.

But in a letter to lead members and council officers Gove said: "I am committed to working with you in the months ahead to ensure local authorities continue to play a full strategic part in securing the improvement we all want to see."

He said that he wants councils to contact him and is to meet with the LGA to discuss ways "we can strengthen local authorities to help drive up standards."
