LOCAL FOOD PLAN FOR ISLE OF WIGHT SCHOOL DINNERS

Three primary schools on the Isle of Wight will be taking part in a trial scheme to use more locally-grown produce in their meals.

The Local Produce Pilot Project will run throughout the autumn term and aims to improve the standard of meals in schools. Menus will be influenced by the produce available at that time of year enabling pupils to learn more about seasonal foods.
The results will also be monitored to see if the scheme results in more pupils taking school meals. If successful it could be introduced throughout the island.
Conservative councillor Patrick Joyce, the island’s cabinet member for schools leadership and governance, said: “Not only does this project contribute to the health of pupils, but it also benefits the Island's economy and businesses.”
The government has provided additional funding for the scheme.
